In contrast to Northern Europe, people in most other parts of the world, most especially at markets, are regularly confronted with the bodies of dead animals. In our society, the body of a dead animal, recognizable as such, is most often left out of the picture. In Germany and the Netherlands it was custom to make a tableau of animals killed at the hunt. Such tableaux are to be found in the still lifes of the Old Masters. It was also custom that the hunters line up before these animals while a particular piece was sounded on the hunting horn, the animal’s final honour. While on my travels, I take photographs of the bodies of dead animals that I come across, I am drawn to them and want to study them carefully. Curiosity, horror and wonder alternate. I, in my turn, do for them a final honouring, by sprinkling their image with a soft rain of flowers, leaves, soap bubbles…
